about

Piano blues was popular in the twenties through to the forties, and piano and guitar duos not uncommon, particularly from the popularity of Leroy Carr and Scrapper Blackwell. Much less so these days. In fact guitarists find it a challenge to work with piano because they both have a percussive sound and overlapping pitch that can be hard to blend. The key to making it work is less chops all round and more listening to each other, making sure your rhythms are consistent and complementary, and the piano left hand is not too loud. We tried very hard to get the balance right on the CD. When it works it's magic!

The CD title derives from one of the tunes, Dead Cat On The Line. All the tunes are from the period 1920 - 1940. Most originate as piano-guitar duets that we've put our own spin on.
