It Hurts Me Too

from Dead Cat Blues by Bill Lawrie & Paul Gioia

/

about

This tune has amazing pedigree, with no less than Clapton, Mayall and Allison covering the classic Elmore James arrangement. But the original was written by Tampa Red (Hudson Whittaker), accompanied by Georgia Tom (Thomas A. Dorsey - yes, that Dorsey) on piano. We think the original, recorded in 1940, has a tenderness that's lost in the later covers, so we've kept the jazz chords. It's also one of those few blues tunes with affirming lyrics.

Tampa was a brilliant guitarist, and played with Georgia Tom for many years, occasionally as house band for Bessie Smith. It's ironic that while Thomas Dorsey was developing his now-famous black gospel chorus sound, he was singing dirty ditties with Tampa to earn their bread and butter.
