Sittin' On Top Of The World

from Dead Cat Blues by Bill Lawrie & Paul Gioia

/

about

The Mississippi Sheiks were a country blues band from the thirties, notable for having fiddle as part of instrumental lineup. This tune was written by Pete Chatmon and recorded in 1930. It's since been covered by Clapton, Howling Wolf, Doc Watson, and more recently by Jack White on the soundtrack for Cold Mountain. The thing I most love about this tune is the lyrics, a triumph of life and optimism over a broken heart. Well that's how I read it. On the other hand, he might just be glad she's gone.
